New candidate…

Filed under: Views — Jocko @ 11:23 pm

Have you heard that Briony Penn, formerly of the Green Party, will be running for the Liberals in Saanich-Gulf Islands in the next Federal Election? The May edition of Focus magazine, available at most Penninsula newstands, features an interesting interview with Penn. The interviewer, David Broadland, delves into questions about climate change and Penn’s thoughts from a Liberal political perspective. This is our riding, let’s find out about all of the candidates views.

Wakey wakey!

We enjoyed a truly lovely gulf islands day on the water headed for Ganges for fishing (ie. shopping) and lunch. It was your Gilligan’s “three hour cruise”. The weather, however, was not getting rough by Mother Nature, but by the inconsiderate mega wake from a large, ploughing, pleasure seeker headed up sound. The entire channel seemed to be jostled by the ensuing waves. Sailors were seen shaking their heads and pounding the air with their fists. To no avail. The purpetrators were long gone and oblivious. I know you boaters are well aware of this happening, so who are these minority of thoughtless, inconsiderate boaters? As was heard on the VHF, in exasperated tones “Do you read ‘megayacht name here’, you obviously have way more money than courtesy!” The lesson: stay well clear of vessels that may leave behind a large wake including freighters and ferries.

Ferry fair?

So there’s no inflation. But ferry fares are possibly going to increase by over 30 percent in the next 3 to 4 years for routes which are not major routes. Are you satisfied with the current and projected fare levels? See the well researched articles by Patrick Brown in the April 19 – May 2 and May 3 – May 18 editions of the Island Tides to get a better picture of what could be in store. Let your opinion be known ASAP!  Ferry commissioner: martin.crilly@bcferrycommission.com; Saanich North and the Islands (Lib): murray.coell.mla@leg.bc.ca  A complete list of contacts are on page 8 of the May 3 edition of the Island Tides.

Ball games

Filed under: Kids zone,Recreation, Health and Fitness — Jocko @ 12:58 pm

The home games of the Pender Island Pirates are over for 2007, but ad hoc games and practice will continue throughout the rest of the year.

The Pender Pirates Baseball club are now selling Victoria Entertainment coupon books. This is a great idea for a Christmas gift! Booklets are $30. and valid until Nov. 2008. Call Shelley at 629-6612 to order yours. Let’s help support our local team for the upcoming season.

In addition, a bottle drive will be held on Sunday November 25th from 10am to 2pm. Please don’t drop bottles off at the at the baseball park when a bottle drive is not on as it can create a problem with storage and unsightlyness.

By the way, there have been several improvements to the ball park in the past year, and don’t forget, there is a concession stand for main events!

Thieves Bay

Have you checked out the Thieve’s Bay Marina website lately? It’s still “under construction” but judging by the current website, the finished product will be a winner. Check it out at
www.thievesbay.com.  Now even better with downloadable forms.
