Whale worries…

Filed under: Nature watch — Jocko @ 7:59 pm

The following post is from Richard Fox:

Is Pender suddenly losing its orcas? The depletion of the salmon population around the island could lead to that. This winter the L pod had to journey all the way to Monterey, CA to feed. Last summer the residents all but disappeared from our waters from mid-July through the end of the summer. So far during May (2008) I have only seen a resident pod once (evening of May 9), and tonight (May 27, Photo) a group of 4 came by close in around 9pm, but I could not tell if they were residents or transients. If anyone sees orcas around Pender, please report them here! Also, an exciting new development are the return of the humpbacks to inland waters. Has anyone seen a humpback from Pender? That would be the ultimate thrill.

  1. A pod went by the Mouat Point area around 9:15 pm on Friday June 13th.
It may have been K pod since there was a very active baby.

  2. One of the pods, more than 15 whales, passed by Mouat Point on June 24th around 1:45 pm. I hope I am wrong and the pods keep greeting us here on Pender!
