Car stops have started!

Car Stops have arrived on the Penders!

This is your chance to get free lifts around the Penders by standing at recognized Car Stops. If you drive a car, you may wish to stop at these designated pullouts and give a lift to one or more people. It is a voluntary activity on both sides. There are 16 Car Stops around the Islands, and most residents will have received a map in the latest edition of Island Tides, showing where these Car Stops are situated.

With this map is a green card which reads: I GIVE RIDES, and those who own a car, and are prepared to give lifts off the ferry at Otter Bay, should place the card in the front window of their vehicle before they leave the car deck. Those who need lifts will wait by the vehicle as the ferry approaches Pender Island.

Each Car Stop has a double-sided sign that reads CAR STOP. Below this is a single-sided sign that reads:

DRIVERS DON’T HAVE TO TAKE THE FIRST IN LINE.

YOU’RE NOT OBLIGED TO ACCEPT A RIDE, THAT’S FINE.

YOU ACCEPT A RIDE AT YOUR OWN RISK, BUT THE RIDE IS FREE, SO CONSIDER IT A GIFT.

This is a pilot project, and there will be an opportunity for further discussion at the MAP (Moving Around Pender) Alternative Transportation Society’s Forum: Reinventing the Wheel, on Saturday September 13, at the Community Hall. Watch for more details in the September flyer.  Background info: here
