The Power & Sail Squadron…..What Will Be Number 10?!

Filed under: Arts and Entertainment — Jocko @ 12:12 pm

Suspense is mounting as the local Canadian Power & Sail Squadron prepares their 10th performance-art style parade float for the Fall Fair Parade that begins at 10:30 am on Saturday August 24th.  Arrive by 10 to ensure that you can park and get to a spot to see the parade.

Each year the Squadron draws attention to boating safety with its spirited floats and accompanying mini-skits.  To date they have performed Gilligan’s Island (2003); The Pirates of Thieves Bay (2004); Getting Married to Boating Safety (2005); The Boatcracker Suite (2006); The Titanic (2007);  Popeye (2009);  The Starship Penderprise (2010); Greek Gods present the Safety Dance (2011);   Gilligan’s Reprise (2012) and number 10 for 2013???

Its anyone’s guess, except for Richard Fox and Helen Lemon-Moore who are once again leading the creative CPS team’s efforts for the float.

Be there, and boat safely!  Boating courses start in September.

“IN A BIG MACHINE” will be available commercially in January 2011, pre-orders available at any shows, and Oliver’s OFFICIAL WEBSITE is coming soon!

The Pre-Release Shows…
Victoria’s favorite folk and traditional musician, Oliver Swain, has finally recorded his solo album! Join Oliver and his new band “Big Machine” for a series of pre-release shows on Vancouver Island this fall! Though the official release of “In A Big Machine” is coming this winter, Oliver’s hometown crowd and loyal fans can listen to the music in all its full-band glory, and pre-order a copy of the CD before anyone else! Joining Oliver’s voice, bass and banjo stylings onstage and forming “Big Machine” are: Adrian Dolan (fiddle/accordion), Quinn Bachand (guitar), James Whitall (mandolin), Josh Dixon (trap kit), and Emily Braden (vocals). Don’t miss your chance to preview this all-star group showcasing an album sure to be the 2011 folk favorite.

Oliver Swain is already a well known name in the North American folk music scene. He’s shone at the forefront of the WCMA nominated group Outlaw Social, held up the bottom end of The Bills, and even completed a one year stint with Louisiana’s popular Red Stick Ramblers. He’s won awards, supported many well known Canadian musicians, and spearheaded and effort to bring a folk festival back to his hometown of Victoria. Now, with his solo debut In A Big Machine, Oliver is set to wow all who hear it with his stunning vocals, lulling banjo, and audacious upright bass, backed by the amazingly talented Big Machine band. This album has been eagerly anticipated for a long time, following two years of successful solo tours across Canada, and overseas journeys supporting triple Grammy nominee Toni Childs between.
Contact ModMay Promotions for press opportunities with Oliver Swain’s Big Machine!

In A Big Machine is a beautiful collection of five tracks of Oliver’s original music, coupled with a few heavy hitting traditional numbers, and Oliver’s 120 year old goat skin banjo take on a Bruce Springsteen classic. The album takes the experimental folk sound Oliver is known for, and weaves a personal and touching tone into it, showing his emotive writing and varied vocal pallet. It rocks the folk out on a few songs, pushes the boundaries of a bowed upright bass on others, and keeps the pace through the rest with Oliver’s signature clawhammer banjo style. In A Big Machine was co-produced by Adrian Dolan (The Bills, Rankin Sisters, Chieftains) with Oliver at Marlborough Studios, and boasts a slew of appearances from his contemporaries such as Jeremy Penner (The Wailin’ Jenny’s), Emma Beaton (Joy Kills Sorrow), Adam Dobres and Emily Braden to name a few. It’s a collection of music filled with miracles, beauty and tragedy, sure to touch the hearts of all who hear it.
