Room for improvement?

Filed under: News — Jocko @ 7:44 pm

As noted in the May 2008 North Pender Local Trust Area Islands Trust newsletter “The Pender Wave”, road improvements are slated for North Pender. According to the newsletter, “Saanich and the Gulf Islands MLA Murray Coell visited North Pender recently where he joined Local Trustees and community members to announce improvements to our rural roads. The Ministry of Transport will be providing $1.5 million worth of paving on; Otter Bay Road; Bedwell Harbour Road; Canal Road and; Hamilton Road. An additional $400,000 has been allocated for resurfacing on; South Otter Bay Road; Hoosen Road; Clam Bay Road; Port Washington Road and; Razor Point Road.” Only the stretches of each road in need of improvement will be paved. No mention was made of improving roads in Magic Lake Estates, many of which are in pretty sorry shape.

The North Pender Local Trust Committee encourages public involvement.  To help plan the future of North Pender Island contact Gary Steeves at 629-3595 or Ken Hancock at 629-6610.  The Local Trustee Office is open by appointment by calling 629-6033.

Pender Health Centre update

The estimated total cost of the expansion and renovation of the Health Centre is $1,300,000. To date over $1,040,000. has been raised thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the community and with a generous grant from the CRD. We still require an additional $260,000 to complete the expansion and renovation. We are making every effort to raise these additional funds in the next 3 to 4 months through many sources including corporations, foundations, government sources, and by asking that you, the residents of Pender, show your continued support with a year-end, tax deductible donation to the Pender Islands Health Care Society Building Fund. Please mail or drop-off your contribution to:

The Pender Island Health Centre Society – Building Fund, 5715 Canal Rd., Pender Island, BC V0N 2M1 250 629-3326

And please continue to designate your Tru-Value purchases to the Health Centre Building Fund (#32). We raise almost $1,000. per month through this initiative. Thanks Tru-Value. For more information on how to make a contribution please call Robert Dill at 250 629-3326.

We also offer our heartfelt thanks to the Pender Island Community Services Society (Nu-to-You) who have offered the Health Society an interest free loan of up to $80,000. to help ensure that we can continue with the expansion, while additional funds are being raised.

We are pleased to announce that we will be welcoming a new physician for the Penders! Dr. Michael Thompson will be moving to Pender with his wife Sandra and will begin practicing at the clinic on January 14, 2008. Michael has an extensive background in family and rural medicine and will be a wonderful addition to our team.

Island economy threatened?

The new proposed war on drugs legislation from the Harper Conservative government would bring a minimum 6 month jail sentence for growing a single cannabis plant. Refer to the article in the Vancouver Province newspaper for details: Ottawa cracks down. Is the holding tank on Pender big enough to accommodate the potential landslide of newly designated island “offenders”. Let your MP Gary Lunn know what you think about the proposed legislation at: http://www.garylunn.com/

Short term vacation rental update:

Filed under: Governance and Legal,News — Jocko @ 4:23 pm

The Pender Islands Vacation Accommodations Association (PIVAA) has announced a victory in their defense of short term vacation rentals (STVR’s). A circular just issued by the PIVAA states: “In a recent Supreme Court of British Columbia decision, the North Pender Island Local Trust Committee (LTC) made up of Gary Steeves, Ken Hancock & Giselle Rudischer, lost its bid to stop property owner, Robert Conconi, from providing short term vacation rental accommodations. The Honourable Mr. Justice Hinkson dismissed the Trusts charges with “costs to the defendant”. This means that our tax dollars will be used to pay Mr. Conconi’s costs as well as the Islands Trust’s prosecution expenses”.
