TAP-C, TA-PC or is it T-APC?

There is a Notice Of Meeting of the North Pender Island Transportation Advisory Planning Commission scheduled for Saturday, April 12, 2008 at 10:00 am at the Local Trust Committee Office at the Driftwood Centre. The T-APC (really!) is a group of volunteers appointed by the LTC (I forget what that stands for) to discuss transportation issues such as new cycling and pedestrian trails, or other matters referred to them. The T-APC works in cooperation with the Paths on Pender group (no acronyms here please) run by community members. The main item(s) on the next T-APC agenda are:

1. Islands Trust agreement with Ministry of Transportation;

2. Bike paths on Bedwell Harbour Rd. (and other locations);

3. Pender Islands Parks Commission Master Plan;

4. Adding a T-APC Member (call Trustee Ken Hancock at 629-6610 if you are interested).

Members of the public are welcome to attend and comment briefly at T-APC meetings. Please contact T-APC Secretary Zorah Staar at 629-3825 if you have related questions or comments.

Like to Bike?

Comprehensive mountain bike park on Pender?

Do you like mountain biking?

Do you agree that the roads are too narrow, hilly and dangerous?

Are you frustrated because there are no trails on Pender Island that you can legally ride on?

Would you support a comprehensive mountain bike park on North Pender?

I have started an initiative to have an old gravel pit on South Otter Bay Rd., released from the bottom of Gulf Island National Park Reserve, better known as Roe Lake Park. This area is of no ecological value, and would satisfy ALL the mountain bike needs of all riders of Pender Island.

Watch for my submissions in the Pender Post, and the Island Tides newspaper.

Start your creative journey…

Writing and yoga have this in common: those who practice master not only the skills, but also themselves. In this workshop, you’ll be invited to do guided journal writing and yoga movements with two experienced facilitators. Learn how integrating these practices creates more flow in your life. Bring awareness to your internal clutter and learn how to nurture yourself. Be present, slow down, laugh, and experience yourself in a more complete way. Discover yourself in the nature and stillness of Pender Island. No writing or yoga experience is needed.

Reinekke Lengelle, MA is a playwright, poet, and self-help author. She has also guided hundreds of students and hospital patients on their creative journeys and started the first Canadian branch of Lapidus – an arts organization that explores the connections between writing and wellness. Currently, Reinekke is a visiting graduate professor with Athabasca University where she designs and facilitates courses on writing and transformation.

Angela Weins was introduced to yoga in 1998. Since then, yoga has become her constant and compassionate teacher, providing a way to live in the present moment with awareness and gratitude. Angela has studied with Rosemary Antze, Eddie Modestini and Nicki Doane, David Williams, Swami Veda Bharati, Ken Strachan, Maya Margo Balog, Mary-Jo Fetterly, and Jennifer Steed. Her path to self discovery continues with the guidance of her own intuition and study, and her supporting family and friends.

Date: May 23 to 25, 2008.

Fee: $160. (includes GST) Optional two hour kayak trip for an additional fee of $45.

Place: Pender Islands Community Hall

Pender Health Centre update

Filed under: News,Recreation, Health and Fitness,Services — Jocko @ 7:33 pm

The estimated total cost of the expansion and renovation of the Health Centre is $1,300,000. To date over $1,040,000. has been raised thanks to the overwhelming generosity of the community and with a generous grant from the CRD. We still require an additional $260,000 to complete the expansion and renovation. We are making every effort to raise these additional funds in the next 3 to 4 months through many sources including corporations, foundations, government sources, and by asking that you, the residents of Pender, show your continued support with a year-end, tax deductible donation to the Pender Islands Health Care Society Building Fund. Please mail or drop-off your contribution to:

The Pender Island Health Centre Society – Building Fund, 5715 Canal Rd., Pender Island, BC V0N 2M1 250 629-3326

And please continue to designate your Tru-Value purchases to the Health Centre Building Fund (#32). We raise almost $1,000. per month through this initiative. Thanks Tru-Value. For more information on how to make a contribution please call Robert Dill at 250 629-3326.

We also offer our heartfelt thanks to the Pender Island Community Services Society (Nu-to-You) who have offered the Health Society an interest free loan of up to $80,000. to help ensure that we can continue with the expansion, while additional funds are being raised.

We are pleased to announce that we will be welcoming a new physician for the Penders! Dr. Michael Thompson will be moving to Pender with his wife Sandra and will begin practicing at the clinic on January 14, 2008. Michael has an extensive background in family and rural medicine and will be a wonderful addition to our team.

Let’s go for a walk

Filed under: Recreation, Health and Fitness — Jocko @ 6:10 pm

Pender Walking Group
This lively, chatty, and energetic group meets every Monday and Friday in the upper parking lot at the Anglican Church. They depart promptly at 930 a.m. after deciding on that day’s walk. The decision depends upon weather, local information, and makeup of the group.
Walks usually take about 2 hours.
There are no dues, rules, or anything but talking and walking. Experience new trails and viewpoints. Find out about just about anything–somebody in the group probably knows somebody who knows the answer.
Get exercised while you socialize!!! Only on a steep trail does this group quieten!
Just turn up in the parking lot a bit before 930 on Monday or Friday. Give your heart a boost…
